     Engagement Party

Hi! When should you host an engagement party, our wedding is not until November 2005 and it will be in Mexico. My fiance is from the east coast and many of his close friends and family are spread all over the world, should we invite them all even though they probably will not attend because they will be at the ceremony?

Dear Engagement Party,

Traditionally the bride's parents would host an engagement party soon after the couple announced their engagement. So, your parents should be allowed the first chance at doing this. You may host your own and invite the families to 'get to know each other'.

This is not considered a gift giving event, because originally an engagement party was a surprise for the guests. Plus, if you hosted your own, it would be very tacky to expect gifts. Having said all of that, it would be best to register as soon as the word is out about the engagement.

Please do not include any gift registration information with any of your invitations.

Congratulations.
