     Ex-boyfriend of Groom's Mother

The 5-year boyfriend of the groom's mother was invited to her son's wedding, with a proper invitation from the bride and groom. The wedding is taking place on the opposite coast from where the groom's mother and boyfriend live. The boyfriend bought his own airline ticket to attend the wedding, sent a gift, and money to the bride and groom more than a month ago.

The groom's mother and boyfriend got into a fight and now the mother doesn't want the boyfriend to attend. What's the proper thing to do here? Should he attend or go by the mother's wishes?

Dear Desoto,

This is a tough one, as she is not the typical guest. She is one of the mothers, so is treated as very special. And, the only reason he was invited is because he was her significant other. However, he was invited and has graciously sent a gift. So, unless he was abusive or dangerous in some way, he shouldn't be uninvited. He just wouldn't be treated as her escort. He would be just like any of the other guests.

Best wishes,
