Groom's family to host engagement party

Groom's mother wants to have a engagement party in the form of an open house at her home for the purpose of family members and close friends of families meeting one another. She's thinking about 50 guests max. I don't know anything about engagement parties, etc., but I will offer to help with food. Is a gift optional? My daughter says she and her fiance are not expecting any gifts. This is just an opportunity for family members and close friends of both sides of family to meet. Are there any engagement party rules these days? Thank you.

An engagement party is not considered a gift giving event although some guests might bring gifts anyway. Please ask the bride and groom not to open gifts at the party. Remember that everyone invited to the engagement party must also be invited to the wedding.
