Invite to reception but not ceremony?

As we plan the wedding, the limiting # is seating for the ceremony, max 80. We can have more (eg 100) for reception, but is it appropriate to invite guests to the reception and NOT the ceremony? And if so, how on earth does one do an invitation for that?

It is fine to invite guests just the reception. You wouldn't want to do it the other way around though. You will have a wedding invitation and a reception invitation and send to guests appropriately.

You can find wedding and reception invitation wording here.
