Is the mother of the groom obligated to purchase a gift for the bride? The bride did not have a bridal shower, and the mother of the groom has already given a gift in lieu of the shower. Is the mother of the groom supposed to give another gift at the church before the wedding?

No one is obligated to provide a gift at a wedding. This is a gesture. You do not have to give another gift. Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com

The gift giving guidelines are so situationally specific... For most social circles, when parents contribute to the wedding budget, they do not give wedding gifts. With that said, weddings are a great time to pass down family heirlooms.
