I have always been under the impression that if I attend a shower and take a gift another gift is not required at the wedding. Am I wrong? I cannot find anything in etiquette rules that will tell me.

I'm sorry to have to tell you, but you are wrong. A gift is expected for both the shower and the wedding. (mail the gift to the home of the bride before the wedding) That is why the bridal shower is supposed to be a small gathering of just the closest friends and family bringing inexpensive gifts. many brides are even opting for giftless showers these days.
