My fiancee and I have planned an intimate wedding in Jamaica, only inviting immediate family and 2 very close friends. I was just informed by my father (who was fully aware of our plans) that he has booked the day after my and my fiancee's ceremony for a full renewal ceremony and reception in Jamaica for he and my mother's 25th wedding anniversary. He also expects me and my new groom to attend (on the first day of our honeymoon). Honestly I am a bit upset about this and I don't feel we should be obligated to attend, even though they are immediate family. I know if we don't go, we will get the total guilt trip. Are we right in not going?

Dear K,
I have to agree with you that this isn't very polite. It is fine for them to schedule something like this for them to share privately. But, to make this trip about them and to take a day from your honeymoon...well, isn't nice.
