Party for bridal couple to introduce to parents' friends

I am the mother of the bride and would like to have a party for our friends to meet our daughter and fiance. We are new to the area we live in and many of our friends have not met them. Our daughter lives in another state and she is having a destination wedding. Most of friends will not be attending. Can I host some kind of an engagement party for them at our home?

Dear Jayne,

Only those invited to the wedding may be invited to any prewedding party. Even though the engagement party is not supposed to be a gift giving event, some view it as such. So, it just may appear as if you want everyone to give your daughter a gift, but they are not "good" enough to invite to the wedding.

Best wishes,
