Am I required to provide a meal at the reception for the photographer and his assistant? I have heard of other couples who fed their vendor's sandwiches instead of providing a meal from the caterer, but what is considered good wedding etiquette?

You really should provide the photographer with a meal. Typically the photographers spend a good portion of the wedding day working so they'll need to eat. Speak to your wedding reception manager or caterer. They usually have a table or adjacent room for vendors to sit and eat.
