     Seating Bride's Mother's Boyfriend

What are the rules regarding the bride's mother bringing a boyfriend to her daughter's wedding when he has children, age 10 and 12? Do they sit on the front row with the mother while the Father, who is paying for the ceremony, sits in the 2nd or 3rd row? The Father may not be happy about this seating arrangement. What do we do?

Dear Kj,

The children don't have to sit in the front row. In fact, they shouldn't. They can sit in the third or fourth row with a pre-chosen person, someone they feel safe with.

The person who (mostly) raised the bride should sit in the first row. This is usually the mother. If the father raised the daughter, he would sit in the first row. However, many times both raised the daughter, and to keep the peace the father sits in the third row to keep distance between the parents. If all get along fine, then they can all sit in the first row.

Best wishes,
