Shower, wedding , and no reception

The bride and groom are having a wedding ceremony only, and will most likely take wedding party to dinner. There will be approx 70 people invited to ceremony with no reception to follow. I was already struggling with this, when the bride expresses that she would like to have a shower. I think inviting people even if they are family to a shower and wedding, expecting some to buy 2 gifts. And not even having a reception. I don't get it. I mentioned twice I didn't feel comfortable doing this and I was given a guilt trip. I don't know what to do? Is it proper to have a shower if you know there is not going to be a reception only a wedding ceremony??
