Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. Can the something borrowed be any item? Is it true about having some blue, does this mean that the bride has to wear the blue.

Thank you lmgrimes

None of this is mandatory - it's an old tradition that is supposed to bring good luck. Following the tradition is your choice. The borrowed something can be anything borrowed but is usually something like a keepsake handkerchief that has been handed down, a piece of jewelry from a dear relative, etc. The blue could be reflected in your garter or in a handkerchief. It's all your choice.
