Unity Candles - step mother raised you

Hi I was wondering who lights the unity candles if my mom wasn't around much when I was growing up and my step mom was and we are very close. My mom is only in the picture when it is convenient for her or when she can be in the spot light. What do I do for the Unity candles and where does my mom and step mom sit in the pugh's. Please help me with this I don't know where else to turn. Thanks Sandi

Dear Sandi,

A unity candle is an option, not mandatory. If you want to use it, anyone can light it from your side. It should be the person who represents your family. So, it your step mother raised you, she may. Also, if she raised you, she and your father or her escort may sit in the front pew. The mother who did not raise you could sit in the third pew.

Best wishes,
