Wedding etiquette behind who can catch the bouquet

Who is eligible to catch the bouquet? Would an engaged girl catch the bouquet on only girls not already engaged? I'm sure it can go either way but just would like to know the real original tradition.

Thanks!

Dear Mymichele,

The 'real tradition' began as all wedding guests ripping the bride's clothes because all brides are lucky and perhaps marriage or babies could result from a bit of cloth from one. So, she eventually began to throw ribbons and finally flowers to her guests.

All single ladies may vie for the bouquet, although many are eliminating this element from their reception.

Best wishes,
