gift if no invite to wedding

I have been invited to an "after" party. Meaning after the ceremony and after the reception (aka food). Is it customary still to purchase a gift. I heard that gifts are optional at all weddings but I just wasn't sure if it is rude just to bring a card.

thanks

Dear Gift,

You are correct that gifts are always optional. In fact, if gifts are given, it is most proper to mail them. So, it is not rude to show up with only a card--or just your appetite.

Enjoy your event.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
