invite to ceremony but not reception

We go to a very small church where we feel close to a lot of people but we are planning a small wedding & reception for family and a few close friends. The church will accommodate a lot of people whereas the reception site is very small. Is it proper to issue an open invite to the church body to join us at the ceremony without inviting them to the reception? If so , what is the proper way to do this?

Dear Small Reception,

The only way this is ever appropriate is when you are not inviting guests, except family and it is an open church wedding. Typically it is announced in the church newsletter--no invitations. There is usually a simple reception at the church for the members. Then the family has a dinner later.

But, if you are having a 'real' reception, everyone who was invited to your wedding should be invited to the reception.

Best wishes,
