My daughter is getting married and her father (ex husband) is not assisting at all. Our budget is very tight, and we are having only water, tea and coffee at the reception with a cash bar. Is this a huge social boo-boo? We simply cannot afford to buy even one drink for each guest at the hotel where the wedding will be.

In most social circles a cash bar is considered tacky. If you cannot afford a full open bar perhaps consider serving a champagne punch, serving just beer and wine or even limiting the beer and wine or punch to the cocktail hour only. Speak to your banquet manager about affordable options and then, if none of these options fits into your budget, have a "dry" wedding; the wedding you can afford to host.
