Do floating candles have to be used on the reception tabel isn't this unsafe?

I was told by one of the ladies that I have to have floating candles on the reception table its this alittle unsafe there will be children present at the reception. Is there away that I can look into something decorative such as floating candles or something like this without worrying about safety of my guests as well as others?

Dear Angela:

Firstly, you don't have to have candles of any kind.

However, if you are going to be using candles you must first consider the venue (indoors, outdoors, reception hall, tent, etc?). Then think about the container you'll be using; is it steady on the table or will it slosh around if bumped? Will these children be properly supervised? What does the reception venue owner or caterer have to say about the use of candles?

For alternatives to using real candles you might want to think along the lines of luminaries. Please consider your venue and the formality of the evnt though.

1. In a decporative pail or planter pot, fill with sand, insert a oilar candle and over that a glass hurricane lamp.

2. Get together any container made of metal (paint cans, large soup cans, etc) fill with water, freexe, punch holes in through the sides to form pattern of your choice, melt the water and remove. Set candles inside.

3. Go to your local home store and get pvc tubes. They will curt them for you. Have them but in lengths of about 12 to 18 inches. Paint with heat resistant paint on the outside. Place on the ground or on your tables, etc and insert a flashlight (light side up).

4. Take stainless steel colanders and place one on top of the other forming a dome over the first. Insert small flashlight or battery operated "touch" lights inside.

You can replace any candle inside a luminary with a flashlight or one of those battery operated "touch" lights" like the ones you see advertised for closet walls. Just be careful about what sort of holder you are using and be sure it's not flammable.

I think candles can be a beautifully, romantic adition to your wedding decorations if carefully planned.

Check out the flameless candles here:

They're a bit costly but if they fit into your budget then this would be a safe alternative to candles.
