My daughter will be married in December. There will be 6 groomsmen, and to save costs, she does not want to use boutonnières for the groomsmen. Are boutonnières really necessary? If the groomsmen didn't wear boutonnières, would it be appropriate for just the groom to wear a boutonnière?

Usually, the groom wears a flower that is one also used in his bride's bouquet, and the groomsmen wear boutonnières that complement his (groom). The purpose of them is to make a festive, yet understated addition to the men's attire. It is no different from what the bride does for her bridesmaids by providing them with bouquets.
Therefore, at only $6 - $8 a piece (roughly), boutonnières are not going to break the bank and do so much with so little. I recommend she reconsider cutting them out. If she needs to cut back on something, perhaps scaling back on another area of decor will get her where she feels she needs to be in regard to the budget.
Cheers!

No, they are not necessary and neither are attendants bouquets. But, they are nice and I agree with Rhonda. Sue of Hobart's Fine Florals http://www.hobartsfineflorals.com
