Our florist suggested we should use Bombay orchids on our leis and flower arrangements. What exactly are Bombay orchids? We wanted to just use the purple orchids (purple being our dominant color), but then he said, the purple orchids are more a lavender and lighter shade. Is that true? Should we switch florist? Just kidding. Our florist actually does good work, but he is bossy at times.

Well...I can't say I have ever heard of a Bombay orchid either...I think you need to ask him directly what he means... Perhaps they are dendrobiums from Bombay...Or perhaps he is hooked into something that nobody else knows about. Reguardless of why...you deserve to have a clear and easy rapor with your florist. This is YOUR wedding...and it should not be about the florist but about you ...It is not too much to ask for a sample or at least a photo of what he is planning on using. There are widely available purple dendrobiums that come in vivid fuchsia purple and are beautiful and reasonably priced. There is also a truly purple milton orchid called "vanda" which is much pricier. Ask for more specifics and if he gets bossy you may indeed have good reason to look around...There are usually plenty of other fish in the sea...so to speak. Thank you. Our florist did say they are mixed purple and white dendrobium orchids. I just never heard of Bombay orchids before, and I'm glad I am not the only one. You are the expert, so you would know. He showed me a sample, and they look like the kinds of orchids you would see being sold everywhere: magenta in color. I like them, actually, but I do prefer the real purple orchids, but he keeps insisting they are lavender. Does he know what is talking about? I have seen pictures of the purple orchids, and they look darker to me. I wish we can switch florist, but it is too late. We had put in a significant amount for deposit, and it nonrefundable. THANK YOU for your help.

A very simple answer is to ask him to order you a sample. You will have to pay for it but at least the debate will be over and hopefully your doubts will be put at ease which is a very important factor and probably worth doing. And by the way...let me know if they are really something different. It is always nice to find new different goodies!!! Take care and all the best of luck with your flowers...and more importantly your wedding and marriage...happily ever after! Sue of Hobart's Fine Florals http://www.hobartsfineflorals.com
