I am getting married in mid-September. I am wearing a floor-length ivory gown with no train or veil. I have chosen simple, strapless, deep navy dresses which fall just below the knee for my bridesmaids. The groom and groomsmen are wearing suits - not tuxes. Since we are getting married in the chapel at the reception site rather than a church we are trying to keep the look a little less formal. My step-mother bought a dusty-pink/pale mauve suit (not sure about the color but the style suits her - and the wedding - well). However, MOG bought a chocolate brown floor length formal gown. Not only is it way too dressy but now I have a ridiculous range of colors. Is there any way to make these color look OK together? What colors should I use for bouquets and corsages?
Any help would be MOST appreciated!

Oh Breathe deep and we will work it out. One good thing to remember is that the mothers aren't really a huge part of the wedding party and they have a hard time finding dresses they are comfortable in . So hey, If they are both happy with their choices good for them. Your florist could actually have a great time working with all these colors and can tie it all up nicely. First consider if you would be willing to go with a burnished pink, lavender and purple pallette. This looks great against navy and mixing the color shades in that group can help tremendously in pulling all the colors you are working with together. Then for your accent colors how about a few electric blue delphinium color blooms and chocolate brown hypericum berries. Those berries are really nice in the fall and look great with everything. So then you can pull the chocolate and deep blue into touches in the bouquets and it all comes together. For the corsages just do the similar mix and include the color each person is wearing. As long as none of the gowns are a printed fabric you will be just fine. For bouts the berries look great as do single electric blue delphinium blooms. Both would be distinctive and masculine. In terms of your own bouquet you can use a mostly white with a few lavender and pink shades or go with all the pink , purple and lavender shades and accent it with white rather than the chocolate brown or electric blue. These challenges are really often about how do set up a combination that works and then juxtapose the elements to fit each persons look. A decent floral designer will enjoy the project!!!! Wow! I really learned a lot about color and flowers. Great job.
From an etiquette point of view, I would have to say that the MOG chose the wrong dress. This is only because she isn't supposed to outshine the mother of the bride, which I am guessing your stepmother is in this position. But, if this is not an issue with your stepmother or you, then it isn't a problem.
I really liked how Sue brought the entire wedding party together through flowers. Bravo, Sue. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
