Fall foliage instead of rose petals

Any help or suggestions on this issue is appreciated. We are having an outdoor, fall wedding and I am toying with the idea of having fall foliage gracing my aisle instead of the traditional rose petals. Any ideas on how to preserve color and preventing the leaves from becoming dry and brittle? I don't want the leaves to crumble as they are being tossed or as I am walking over them. Should I just use silk fall foliage? I've always heard a general rule of "real" outside "fake" inside. Collecting the leaves during the week before and treating them so they have that "just fallen look"??

SmileGreat idea. If you live in a fall foliage area this can be as simple as a paper towel lined baggie in the produce drawer of your fridge. A little shake of citric acid on the paper towel will help keep the color too. You can also keep leaves for about a month in good color between newspaper sheets. Try to collect a nice assortment of shapes and if you know of anyone who has a red japanese maple in their yard do ask them for a share of the fallout.
If the season isn't quite in your favor you might consider the preserved leaves you can buy in craft stores. These are usually nice vivid colors and can work well in the mix too. There are a few words of caution in using those. The main thing is that they are often preserved in shaded glycerine. In rare cases this can get sort of damp and begin to bleed. The dyes can be fatal to nice fabrics . So If you buy the preserved leaves check to see if they feel oily. If they do be very careful to dry them out really well before the wedding and avoid extra handling around your dresses and such. It is unlikely they will bleed but who needs to take the chance.
Silk fall foliage will probably not be natural enough for an outdoor setting. Also most places frown on anything that can blow around that has to be picked up later. With real leaves if you miss a few they will just blend into the landscape. If you use silk petals I wouldn't be too surprised if you found yourself charged a greater clean up fee by your vendor. Not a good thing.
