My future wife to be has chosen her colour scheme for the wedding to be blue and white and has seen some perfect flowers for this: White roses with blue edges/tips in a wedding magazine. Problem is now after much searching through the internet we can't find them and are unsure if they exist. Please if anyone can help with this or knows of any other Blue roses or can suggest any other flowers that may be appropriate I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want her to have to settle for anything else and short of breeding my own I don't know what to do...

How sweet you are to not want her to settle for less. A truly blur...not purple or lavender, rose does not exist in nature. Some science project types have figured out a way to dye them electric blue and they are in fact interesting ...BUT>>>>and this is very important...blue dyed roses can bleed dye all over the place....so make other plans!!! I do not know what you saw in the magazine...It may be that or it may also be a color enhancement. This seems to be a recurring thing these days at times....Another thing that may have been done is that the designer may have lightly sprayed the rose with a product called Just For Flowers spray on blue. It is a flower spray paint but actually works pretty well and does not bleed at all. May be worth a try. What I would recommend you look into are these. Blushed blue hydrangea...bred and raised in central america they are lovely and natural and not hard to find. Maybe mix those with the pure beautiful white rose of "Akito" of "Eskimo"...You will have a soft and lovley look. If a little more electric blue is desired check out Volkerfrieden Delphinium or any type of delphinium as a mix in. As of July 1, 2004, blue roses do exist. Not too many people hear about it, because they were bred in Japan. However, Sue's right: Truly blue roses do NOT exist in nature because they lack any blue pigmentation. These roses were crossbred with delphinidin from pansies to get their blue tint. You saw the genetically engineered blue roses? Sorry, I was just confused because I didn't think that the new blue roses from Japan were available yet. It would be awesome if they were.

Hi again...I asssumed that was whatI saw...and they were interesting but a bit odd. I saw them at the Boston Flower Exchange at one of the really big wholesalers. I asked them after you corrected me and that is indeed what they were. They had been given a sample by the grower. They are not widely available yet but in the beginning stages of production. There is some chance you may be able to get some if you talk to a very connected wholesaler...present pricing is about $6 each wholesale which could translate to up to 18 per bloom and then there would be service charge type shipping...in other words big bucks if you can even get them... How about this suggestion..white roses mixed in a bouquet with blue delphinium for the wedding and the bred that way blue roses every anniversary as soon as they are actually on the market??? I do appreciate your tenacity in trying to find them and this has been a fun learning process....take care and have a wonderful wedding and life together!!!! That's all good but they just developed them, which means they're not in stores and not yet available. I also want blue roses in my wedding so I'm dipping the roses in blue wax coloring. It's not only safe, but she can have the roses for ever. Michelle
