My daughter is getting married in a month. Her brother was suppose to be one of the groomsman but had to back out, due to the fact that his girlfriend didn't like a couple of the bridesmaid. Whatever, my question is should he still get a boutonnier? There will be family photos taken.
Thanks Patti

Dear Patricia:
No, he does not receive a boutonniere. Those are supplied for participants of the wedding. Occassionally, they are given to special helpers. Her brother has backed out of the wedding, and it doesn't appear he has any other role in it.
I know you didn't ask for advice on the issue of her brother's reason for backing out her wedding, but 'the girlfriend did not like a few of the Bridesmaids so he had to back out' is not a sufficient reason. I don't know all the particulars of this situation but I have worked many weddings where these types of issues arise and more times than not, they could have been worked through by laying down the selfishness and exercising a little communication and compromise.

I completely agree. From my perspective, there needs to be quite a bit of talking if the girlfriend can stir up problems such as this. If these family photos are to include smiling faces, a family conference is in order. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now

I second that emotion! The real issue here is a brother who allows his girlfriend's jealousy to cause family issues. I know, as a mother, there's probably not much you can do about your son's choice of girlfriends but, if he begins to seem serious with her, perhaps you could speak to him about her jealousy issues and his ability to allow her to dictate the company he keeps which kept him from participating in his own sister's wedding. This girl needs to grow up and your son needs a wake up call! Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
