Are we obligated to send a wedding gift?

I recently visited a half brother (out of town) after 15 years of little contact. While visiting, we learned he was about to be married (2nd marriage) and then subsequently received an invitation. We are not able to attend. Do you think we are obligated to send a gift? And, if you think we should, what dollar amount do you think is appropriate to spend on it?

Dear Lindab,

You are not obligated to give a gift if not attending or if you gave one for his first wedding. If you decide to give a gift, there is no magic dollar amount. Some try to assign one, but it isn't so. One amount may seem generous to some, while lacking to others. It is all perception.

Best wishes,
