Bring gift to wedding or reception?

I am just wondering... if the wedding is condisered the gift giving event and not the reception, then how come EVERY wedding reception in have ever been to has the gift table set up at the reception? Shouldn't it be set up at the actual wedding site? That gives the impression that the reception site is actually the gift giving event.

Dear Lola,

Good question. This is probably because so few actually know what is proper. I fear that we parents haven't done a very good job of teaching. I really wish people did know about this rule though. It would save couples a lot of grief. Many times cards are separated from gifts, so we don't know who gave what. Plus, gifts are often stolen.

Gifts should be shipped to the couple's home before the wedding, although it isn't improper to ship them afterwards. But, the gift should reach the couple soon after the wedding date.

And, even though the wedding is the event, most guests only invited to the reception send a gift anyway. Most of us just don't feel right not too. If we are important enough to be included and we attend, we should congratulate the couple with a gift.

Best wishes,
