Buy both shower and wedding gifts if unable to attend wedding

I have been invited to attend a destination wedding and the bride's wedding shower. We will not be able to attend either event. Although we are friends with the parents, we really don't know the bride and groom. Is it proper for me to purchase both a shower and wedding gift?

Only those close to the wedding couple should be invited to the wedding, especially a costly wedding such as the destination wedding. And, the shower guest list should only contain those very close to the bridal couple.

Since you really don't know the couple, you're not obliagted to send a wedding or shower gift.

I completely agree. If you are not attending, no gift is necessary.
