Expenses to travel to the wedding instead of a gift?

my mother is going to a wedding in indiana she is traveling from new jersey. the wedding is of my sisters friend. i was wondering what is the the gift etiquette. is the traveling expense (plane and rental car) plus the hotel cost and her presence at the wedding the gift or is it required to give a money gift also?

Dear Mighty Buzz,

Your mother's expenses are not a gift, because she chooses to spend to attend. A wedding gift is expected, even though we should never expect one. Money is not the only gift. She could ask where they are registered.

Best wishes,
