Gift from out of town guests

I'm not sure how much to give as a gift. Here is the situation. My husband's best man had given us $400 as a wedding gift. (He did not have to stay at a hotel or anything.)

He is getting married soon and we will have to travel out of state to the wedding and stay 2 nights in a hotel which will cost us about $300. My husband is now his best man.

What is an appropriate amount for a cash gift to him given that we have to expend money for the hotel?

You really cannot determine a set dollar amount when it comes to giving gifts. The amount you deem generous could be an amount another person might think otherwise. This should not be one f those "I gave cousin Frank $100 so now he should at least match that amount". This is not the spirit of gift giving. Consider your relationship with the couple and your budget if you must give a monetary gift.

Alternatively, you could select something off their registry, if they have one, or select a gift personally from your heart. This works well for a destination wedding because all gifts should be sent to the home of the bride before the wedding.
