     Gift sent to In laws

I am getting married this June near where my fiance's family lives. Any gifts from their family/friends is going to their house, and any gifts from my side are going to my parents house. My fiance' and I are both away at school until mid-May and we won't get back home again until then. As gifts arrive at our parents house should we have them opened so we can send thank you notes or do we wait until we can open them ourselves?

Dear Jane,

Your parents could tell you who sent a gift and you could write a note informing the giver that the gift was received and that you will write a formal thank you when you have opened it.

Best wishes,
