Gift to Bride from her Father

My daughter is getting married next July. Her Dad wants to buy her a $2500 diamond necklace as a wedding present. Since the groom cannot afford a wedding gift of this type, I thought he might be insulted. What is the proper wedding etiquette for gifts to the bride from her father?

Dear MOB,

There really is no written etiquette involved here. This is one of those 'what is fair and logical' issues. A necklace is a personal gift more appropriately given by a suitor, unless it is a family heirloom. This is different. Family heirlooms are often given for wedding gifts. So, the groom just may be insulted and feel inferior.

Wouldn't the couple benefit more if the money for the necklace was given to them instead of the necklace? Not that I am a fan of monetary gifts. I typically view this as a negative. But, if he wants to give a gift of this size, it could add to their house buying fund.

Best wishes,
