What is the proper gift etiquette in this situation? We received a destination wedding invitation to which we cannot attend. On the wedding invitation were listed 2 receptions at a later date in 2 different geographical locations to accommodate both sides of the family. We plan to attend the reception in our area. Are gifts expected for such a reception? On the invitation, it was listed where the bride and groom are registered. I know this is poor etiquette, but it also makes it seems as if they are expecting gifts for these receptions. Or, would be proper to send a gift prior to the wedding even though we are not attending?

Dear Joy,
Yes, you are correct that this is very poor etiquette. We never mention gifts as this would appear to be the focus.
Gifts are optional for the reception, although most give one. So, it is your choice to send a gift or no.
