My son has a friend that he went to school with from kindergarden to college (they are now 29) This friend and my son had a bit of a falling out 5 years ago but have put their differences behind them and are now getting along again although not nearly as close as they once were. I am happy about this.
The friend is getting married (he and his fiance are Portugese). My son is invited to the wedding and my husband and I also received an invitation. My son will be going however my husband and I don't really think we should go. We haven't seen too much of the friend in the last few years and we are probably being invited out of respect for my son.
I mention their ethnicity only because for Portugese it is custom to give money for a wedding gift.
If my husband and I attended we would most likely give $250 so my question is would it be appropriate for us to give just $100 with our regrets.

Dear Knarf,
If not attending, you are not obligated to give any type of gift.
