If you're invited to the ceremony and not the reception should you buy a wedding gift?

Dear Not Invited,

No one should be invited to the wedding and not the reception. So, rules seem not to apply here.

The one exception is when the couple is having an open church wedding where all of the congregation is invited and a small family reception is held later. Typically, the church members do not give gifts.

For the typical wedding, gifts should be given for the wedding, not the reception. This is to avoid the appearance that guests are paying for their 'party' invite. Plus, we are giving the couple a gift because we are happy they are marrying. This is why it is called a wedding gift.

Now, whether or not you should give a gift is your choice. Most will say that if you attend, you should give a gift. I probably would.

Best wishes,
