Invited to wedding ceremony only ... gift?

A number of us at the office have been invited to a co-workers wedding ceremony ... not to the dinner or reception. Last week everyone in the office took him to lunch and gave him a card full of money that everyone had contributed. For those of us now attending the ceremony, do we also get a wedding gift? Thanks in advance!

Dear GinaLynn,

It is not polite to invite guests to the wedding and not the reception. Just one of the reasons is that if attending the wedding, you are expected to send a gift. So, technically you are expected to give one.

Best wishes,
