     Is showing up without a wedding gift poor taste?  

A friend and I disagree on this. I say it's not poor taste to show up without a gift if you can't afford one. She says it's poor taste and that guests should ALWAYS bring gifts, no matter what.

Please settle this for us. Thanks.

(This is not to say the bride and groom expect gifts.)

Dear Ariastar,

If attending a wedding we ship a gift to the couple's home before the wedding. We always give a gift even if we can't afford it. The gift doesn't have to be expensive, just thoughtful.
