Not attending wedding - do I have to send a gift?

If I'm invited to a wedding, but not able to attend, am I obligated to give a present?

Dear Guest,

Many etiquette books still state that an invitation obligates the receiver to send a gift. This is something I do not agree with. So, it is your choice.

Best wishes,

Plus, Peggy Post also says that if you are a casual aquaintence, business associate or you haven't seen the couple in years then you are not expected to send a gift.
