Parent vs. adult children wedding gift amount

Hi,

My husband and I are going to his first cousin's wedding next weekend. My brother-in-law (my husband's brother) called to tell us that it is inappropriate for our gift amount to exceed their parent's gift amount. Apparently there is some discussion on the parents possibly giving less than we would normally give to a relative for their wedding. Is this a rule of etiquette?

Thanks.

Jackie

Dear Jackie,

People make these things up as they go and sometimes this is a family tradition. But, you can give any amount you wish.

Plus, money is not the only gift. You can give a gift from their registry.

Best wishes,
