Post-wedding cocktail reception - how much for gift?

My college friend was married last month. She had a small wedding and dinner following and only immediate family was invited. She and her husband are now hosting a cocktail reception to celebrate with all of their friends. I would like to buy the couple a wedding gift. How much is appropriate to spend? Would we spend just as much as we would have had it been a traditional wedding/reception?

Gifts are purchased for the wedding, not the reception, so you're not really obligated by etiquette to bring a gift. However, if you'd like to bring a gift that would be considered very generous. Select a gift which reflects your feelings for the couple and one that fits your budget. Never buy a gift based on a price tag but rather give the gift from your heart. The best gifts are those which the recipient would like but might never buy for themselves. Perhpas some sort of keepsake or engraved momento of the day?
