Received Gift from an Uninvited Friend

It is still before my wedding, and I just received a gift from my friend's estranged father, who is not invited to the wedding. First, am I obliged to send an invitation to him? And if I don't, is it appropriate to keep the gift or return it? Any input you have would be great! Thanks.

Dear Katiemax -

No, you're not obligated to invite this man to your wedding just because he sent you a gift. I'm sure he doesn't expect to be invited and just wanted to wish you well. However, you should immediately send a personal, handwritten thank you note so that he knows you received the gift.

Best of Luck,
