Should MOH participate in group gift for shower and wedding?

As the MOH and same age as the brides mother ( so I am very rusty) am I obligated to go in on a shower gift with the bridal party, I really prefer buying my own shower gift. Is this acceptable? Also, am I expected to buy a joint wedding gift with the others? Again I would like this to be a personal gift from me since I have known her since birth.

Dear Kandygirl,

Giving a group gift is customary only because it is usually less expensive for the attendants. This is fair since you will be spending quite a bit for the bride's wedding. But, if you want to give a personal gift instead, that is fine. It is your choice.

Best wishes,
