Should mother of the groom give bride a gift?

Is it common or expected for the mog to give a small personal gift to the bride just before the wedding? Maybe something tied in to the something old, something new, borrowed and blue tradition. Any suggestions? Also, should we bring something to the brides parents? We live out of state and see them rarely.

Dear Carousel,

It isn't obligatory, but just a nice gesture. For some, it is traditional. Many will give the bride a family heirloom and this could be her 'something old'.

Best wishes,
