I have been engaged for 8 months and we just had our engagement party. We have received some engagement gifts during that period and at the party. Only family and close friends have sent us gifts. I know that we should not use wedding gifts or shower gifts before the wedding. Is the same true for engagement gifts or can we use them since they were given for the engagement and not the wedding? I can't find anything about engagement gift etiquette anywhere. Please help!

Dear LACW,
No gifts given for the wedding, which includes engagement gifts, are to be used before the wedding.

I understand the reasons for not using wedding gifts before the wedding and we do not plan to. However, how do you handle gifts of wine? We received a few bottles at our engagement party. Not all wine is good after it sits. Should we hold this until after the wedding also or is it okay to drink (or eat) perishable gifts?

Wine is fine for long periods of time as long as it is stored properly. There are bottles hundreds of years old. So, keep these until after the wedding. If you were given food items, then you may eat them, as they will perish. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
