     Using engagement gifts

We became engaged in August 2004 and have set July X, 2005 as our wedding date. We’ve booked the place, band, etc. “Save the Date” notices are in the process of being mailed out.

Since we became engaged two months ago, we have received some engagement gifts.

My question is this, “What is the proper etiquette on using engagement gifts prior to the wedding?”

Dear Using engagement gifts,

Congratulations on your up-coming wedding. You must be very excited.

As for engagement gifts, please do not use any before the wedding. But, you should unwrap them so you can send thank you note as soon as possible.

The rational for this is that the engagement could be broken and you would have to return the gifts used or not. So, as embarrassing as it is to return the gifts, it is even more so to return them used. Unfortunately relationships fall apart. I wish it were not so, but it is a cold reality. Hopefully yours will last forever.

Best wishes,
