Since this is a second marriage for both of us we would like to discourge gifts but give people the option/encouragement to make a donation in our honor to a charity that is ministering to the poor in Haiti. What would be the best way to phrase that request?
We thought we would take your suggestion to another couple and use a website to communicate that and other wedding details.
Just state that in lieu of gifts you prefer that a donation be made in your name to:......charity. This can only be communicated on the website. Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com

Any ideas of how to phrase it in a less perfunctory manner?
Use your own words and in a simple fashion. Perhaps you could mention why this is important to you with a link to the charity's web site. Pictures make an impression also. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
