Wedding gift for couple from parents

My husband and I are trying to decide what is the best gift to give our daughter and her fiance for their wedding in 3 weeks. We are paying for the entire wedding and dinner/dance reception but want to give them a nice gift also.

Money seems so impersonal, what is an appropriate amount to spend? What do you think about several place settings of their china or crystal?

Dear Very Generous parent -

When selecting a gift for any occasion do so with the recipient, rather than the price tag, in mind. You've already spent a fortune on the wedding so let the gift be more of a memory. Select something personal, with the couple's taste, hobbies and preferences in mind. Something they can remember the day by, like a keepsake item, would be very nice.

Although a few place settings would be again, very generous, if they have a gift registry they may be getting enough of these already. Will they only think of YOU while using these dishes?

Red Envelope has a nice selection of keepsakes such as a personalized, etched vase or wedding album and Things Remembered has a nice selection of keepsakes like an afghan with the couple's name embroidered on it or a personalized wedding clock. These are all items which, when used or just admired, will remind the bride and groom of how much they are cared for by their parents.

Enjoy the wedding!

Very good suggestions and I couldn't agree more. Something personal is so much better.

You might consider giving them something that helps commemorate the event, like a personalized coffee table photo book. There are several companies that work with individuals and you could have creative control of what is presented. Depending on the number of images, design services required and vendor, price can range from a couple hundred on up.

These books often have a long archive life, 100+ years or more, so they actually become become historical documents. If you do have a book made, consider including descriptive text so that when their great great grandchildren view the book they will have a bit of historical information to tell who is who.
