Wedding gift registry for money gifts

My wedding is costing more that expected (I bet this is unheard of! LOL!) Anyhow, I would rather use the funds towards a home but that's not going to happen and that's ok. But I have recently heard of engaged couples settting up accounts that family and friends can deposit money into for things like honeymoons or homes. Is this true and is it proper "etiquette?" If so, can someone direct me as to how to start setting this up? I'd rather have a new home than new dishware that will be in storage for some time...

Dear Anchorman,

There are these types of accounts and any institution can set one up for a fee. And, believe me there are fees. Everyone wants their cut.

And, even though mainstream etiquette has turned a blind eye to these accounts and just accepted that the guests can decide for themselves if they wish to do it, many if not most people find these funds tacky and greedy. It's like you are asking people to give you their money because you've decided to get married. In fact, Miss Manners ranted about this just this month in her weekly article.

So, if you decide to set one of these funds up, be prepared not to receive much from anyone. Plus, you may notice some grumbling. Most likely no one will 'say' anything negative about it to you. But, there will most likely be some talk.

Best wishes,
