What is the proper etiquette for giving gifts for an elopement?
My brother-in-law just eloped with his girlfriend of over 10 years. They have 2 children together and have lived together since their first child was born. My husband does not want to give a gift because there was no wedding and the only change in their status is they now have rings on their fingers. But shouldn't we still do something? What is the proper etiquette for giving gifts for an elopement? There will not be a reception or any sort of family celebration.

Your husband is technically correct. If there was no wedding then a gift is not required. However, if you love them and want to congratulate them for (finally) making it legal, you can get them a little something. Even a card is a nice gesture.
