What to buy off the wedding gift registry

If it's on the registry, that means I can buy it, right? Phrased another way, is there anything that people put on the registry out of tradition, but don't actually want/expect people to buy? This is the first wedding I'm attending in my own right, so I want to make sure I do everything right. Thanks!

I cannot imagine adding something to your registry because of tradition. The items selected are items desired.
