I'm attending a wedding for our friend. We are not from the U.S. and have been told that in the mid-Tennessee area it if one gives a shower gift, then a wedding gift is not necessary. I'm trying to be a Roman while in Rome. With that in mind, what dollar amount is appropriate to target for? I want to get something that will at least equal the amount that they will spend on us attending the wedding. Can you help??

I have never heard of this "rule". I would go ahead and give the gifts you'd like to give, one for the shower and one for the wedding.
